Excavation and backfill for additions

Careful backfilling to protect your new foundation walls.

Excavation and backfill for additions

Backfilling must be done carefully so as not to damage the foundation walls. Our experienced operators know how to gauge the pressure and adapt their approach to how far the concrete has cured.

Essential precautions

  • Use of appropriately sized equipment near the walls
  • No large rocks near the foundations, as excessive pressure can damage concrete that has not yet hardened
  • Backfilling in successive layers for uniform compaction
  • Verification of the waterproofing and the French drain before backfilling

Confined spaces

In some cases the space between the foundation and the property line is too small for standard equipment. Our mini excavators allow precise backfilling even in the tightest spots.

When should backfilling be done?

Backfilling must only be done after the forms are removed and the concrete has had a minimum curing period. Filling too early puts lateral pressure on walls that have not yet reached their design strength, which can cause irreversible structural cracks.

We also check that the waterproofing and the French drain are correctly installed before backfilling. This rigorous sequence protects your investment over the long term.
